What is Vinpocetine?

Vinpocetine is a derivative of Vincamine, which itself is found in the Periwinkle plant (Vinca Minor). In terms of cognitive benefits that are observed, Vinpocetine is similar to Vincamine but has a higher level of potency. That is why it has become of the most popular herbal nootropics. Research shows that it can improve short-term memory. Its effectiveness is clearly demonstrated in patients with cerebrovascular diseases.

As a nootropic, Vinpocetine is able to increase the blood flow to neuronal tissues by causing the dilation of blood vessels. Improved blood circulation in the brain brings important nutrients and energy and removes unwanted toxins. Consequently, the brain is able to produce ATP (primary energy source in the body) more effectively. This is reflected in higher cerebral levels of ATP as well as elevated ATP concentrations in red blood cells. More brain energy equals increased ability to concentrate and focus.

There is also evidence showing that Vinpocetine plays a role in neuroprotection and can reduce neural inflammation. Therefore it acts as an anti-inflammatory agent that promotes an overall health of neurons. After ingestion Vinpocetine quickly enters the brain and exerts a number of aforementioned functions.

Key benefits:

  • Boosts brain energy
  • Enhanced cognitive capacity
  • Improved memory function
  • Increased concentration & focus
  • Enhanced mood
  • Neuroprotection of the brain

Mechanisms of action:

The exact mechanisms of action are not yet fully understood. One of the suggested mechanisms is increased brain circulation. This results in a more efficient delivery and utilisation of oxygen and all important nutrients.

Vinpocetine appears to act as a modulator of ion channel activity, including interactions on alpha-adrenergic and TSPO receptors. Vinpocetine may also have a suppressive effect on neurotransmitters, such as motivation neurotransmitter and glutamate release. Finally, Vinpocetine increases the firing rate of neurons of the memory neurotransmitter, acetylcholine.

Recommended dosage:

The recommended daily dosage is between 15 - 60 mg taken in 3 equal doses with meals over the course of a day. Vinpocetine requires a prolonged usage before all cognitive benefits can be experienced. Vinpocetine has a bioavailability of around 7%. Vinpocetine works well with another herb-based ingredient, called Ginkgo biloba. By activating different processes both supplements work synergistically and lead to improvements in cognitive functions.

Side effects:

Vinpocetine is a very safe substance. No adverse side effects are reported in the literature following the recommended dosage of oral Vinpocetine ingestion. In fact, it may be an effective antioxidant against toxic substances.
